Summary
- The Critter Launcher is the eighth defense available, unlocked at Headquarters level 14.
- The Critter Launcher is a medium-ranged area defense with average DPS, a moderately large blindspot, and spawns a Critter each time it fires.
Offensive Strategy
- Critter Launchers are dangerous to any troop composition as they rarely tend to deal splash damage. Troops do not prioritize attacking spawned Critters even if they come under fire. Much like how Critters can distract Boom Cannons from destroying Tanks, troops with a low rate of fire are extremely vulnerable, since they give ample time for Critters to stack up.
- Scorchers perform nicely against Critter Launchers, as it has a high attack rate, will frequently switch targets and usually boasts enough damage to defeat Critters in one hit. Likewise, Heavies are also somewhat good against Critters. However, Mechs despite their high rate of fire cannot destroy the Critters in a short amount of time, due to the inaccuracy of their fire.
- Laser Rangers, despite their low range, have piercing attacks to snipe Critter Launchers behind other buildings.
- Grenadiers, if pushed into range of Critter Launchers, are particularly vulnerable due to the fact that they will likely damage/kill themselves in order to take out attacking Critters. To a lesser extent, Bombardiers also suffer, as they are fragile and can be easily taken out. However, this generally isn't an issue for both as they have a small range advantage against Critter Launchers (12/11.3>10).
- Compositions with a high number of troops, such as Riflemen or Heavy-Zooka, work well against Critter Launchers as they can easily prevent large amounts of Critters from accumulating.
Defensive Strategy
- Critter Launchers, like all defenses with a blindspot, work best behind other defenses without one. They're useful for stalling any troops, but their short range and low direct damage can often put them at risk.
- Placing them near Shock Launchers and Shock Mines can be particularly effective, as the stun will prevent enemy troops from killing critters and thus allow for more to pile up.
Upgrade Differences
- Initially, the Critter Launcher is a blue box shaped building with silver bolts connecting it to four stands. A silver tube leads into the interior of the building and a silver handle lays atop of the building.
Trivia
- The Critter Launcher was previously available at Headquarters Level 12.
- The Critter Launcher used to be the only defense that costs more Wood than you can store at the same Headquarters level before Headquarter storage buff happened.
- The Critter Launcher first appeared in Boom Beach: Frontlines and was later added to Boom Beach.
- Projectiles fired by the Critter Launcher are reused from Shock Launchers.
- Critter Launchers are always blue regardless of its allegiance. Critters fired by them were also initially blue, but after April 2023 enemy Critter Launchers now deploy red Critters.
- Cpt. Everspark's Universal Remote ability and Remote Hack can convert the Critter Launcher, as well as those spawned after ability activation.
- At Level 8-18, the Critter Launcher somewhat resembles the old version of the MMG 9000.
